Sunday Checkin – ROW80 – Week 4

And we come once again to Sunday and another ROW80 checkin. Wednesday’s check in was really wonderful with 2700 words written early in the week. I am sorry to say that I have not gotten anything to add to it since then.

I seem to have fallen into the rut of only writing when I am inspired by something. I am ok with that in general, but it is not the discipline that I want. I want to treat this as a job, meaning writing even if I am not feeling it. Oh well, trying not to be so hard on myself, but still knowing where I am heading.

I wrote 1.5 hours with 2700 words this week. No editing. For some reason the editing scares me.

On the other hand, this is pretty much the only goal across work and personal landscape that I didn’t make this week. Sunday is again the time we will rewrite our goal boards for the week and try again.

Ok, short check-in, but done.

  1. I try to take my editing in bits and pieces rather than thinking of it as a whole huge thing I have to get through. It helps, at least for me.

As for writing, I tend to do better by seeing it as my “default position”. If I’m not doing something else, I come to writing. It is my avocation; more than work, and a lot more rewarding.

I only write when I’m inspired – but I’ve shifted my parameters for inspiration. I use freewriting to explore – sometimes, I only manage to get inspired enough to write a few hundred words to figure out what I want to write about…but, over time, I’ve become far more productive.

I don’t know if there’s anything in that that’s helpful for you – but maybe it’ll spark something that will help you find a solution that’s in line with your needs and your nature…

In the meantime, 2700 words is nothing to sneeze at! =D

Good that you found a way. I try to do it in pieces and the pieces get smaller and drop off. I’ll keep trying it and will find my way eventually.

  2. There are all sorts of ideas about how long it takes someone to get into a habit out there. The smallest number I’ve heard is 30 days… The scientists say about 52 days. So, almost 2 months to create a habit of writing. That’s why the nearly months of the ROW80 is such a good tool. And it’s why we support each other, because… it takes a long time to build a writing habit, but falling back? That happens over a few days. And the more we allow ourselves to fall back, the easier it is to fall the next time and the next time… Until we’ve created a habit of being in a rut.

So, don’t berate yourself. Just write.. Maybe the words won’t be the best (yeah, that editing can be fierce, but… it you don’t write, you’ll never know how capable of taming it you are). Just write and build that habit.

Thank you for this. Every encouraging phrase is really helpful, but this comment in specific helped kick me into being more disciplined this week. I got writing done every weekday this week. Not a ton each day, but some.
